Pussification

November 8th, 2004

While commenting on the lack of attractive men on television, it dawned on me that it might mean something. Going over the predominant male sitcom roles in my head, I could only recall a bunch of bumbling idiots…

Jerry Seinfeld – Still in Junior High
Ray Romano – Rides the Short Bus
Al Bundy – Vile and Disgusting
Monk – Requires Supervision
Tim Taylor – Self-Centered
Jim Belushi – Fat Whiner

The list goes on and on. What’s happening in Hollywood to encourage putting forth pathetic loosers as a reflection of today’s gender roles? Surely this isn’t what women want… Is it?

But then I remembered something from way back in Genesis. After the fall, one of the curses put on Eve was that she would want to “rule over” dear Adam. I think what we’re seeing is that unhealthy desire being made manifest in pop culture.

The pussification of men needs to stop.

What is interesting about this phenomenon is that it is men who are predominantly writing, producing, directing, and sponsoring these shows. Maybe men watch the pussification for the same reason I watch “The Anna Nicole” show…I watch and think “Well I’m a lot of things but at least I’m not THAT!!!”

Verrrry interesting. When I think about the shows I (used to) watch, it occurs to me that they actually had real men on them! X-Files was one, Firefly was another. Don’t remember Firefly? It was another Fox show that ran briefly last year and was canned before all the episodes ran. It was studded (pun intended) with manly men, witty writing, womanly women, guns, spaceships…sigh. It was the only show we watched. It’s about to hit the big screen as a major motion picture, and I wish it well.

Neither I or my hubby have time for the drivel that passes for entertainment on TV these days. I suppose we might watch one of the Star Trek shows, but we’d rather pop in a good movie once in awhile instead.

Lisa’s comment has some merit, as well: it’s the culture of mockery. “See, I’m not so bad, at least I’m better than so-and-so…”.

    Meow.

I agree! And it needs to balance out in real life too! Women’s lib was important, but just because wages are not yet equal on an average, doesn’t mean all men should automatically be made feel like they are jerks to women. There are a lot of us that are already treated as rather second class just because of our gender.
