Rose Parade

January 1st, 2005

2005 JPL NASA Caltech Float

Maybe I’ve neglected to say that I’m writing from Pasadena, California. As you may know, today is our big day with the Tournament of Roses parade and Rose Bowl game.

And why am I here writing instead of down on Colorado Boulevard enjoying the parade? Well, because that’s the way it goes. Although we do peel ourselves out of bed each New Year’s morning to watch…

…military jets fly over to kick off the parade!

Yes, that’s right. We woke up at 7:30 threw on jackets and drove down to the freeway, where we were able to get the most unobstructed view of the B-2 Spirit, F-16 Falcon, and F-22 Raptor.

How geeky is that? Screw floats, but for JETS we’ll get out of bed!

I must say, I’m over the whole parade thing. I’ll watch it on TV, but nothing on earth could make me want to spend a freezing cold (in California that’s anything under 50 degrees) night on the parade route.

Paid my dues as a kid – spent hundreds of hours gluing flowers to floats, and walked many miles for the marching band. My family even forced me to try out for the Royal Court and I made it to the second round.

It’s days like today that kinda creep me out… I was born (literally, at Huntington Hospital on Fair Oaks) and raised here and still haven’t left.

I just surfed here through BlogExplosion and wanted to say that my ex-husband grew up in Arcadia and had much the same attitude about the parade. I made him take me to the park after the parade so that I could look at the floats up close, but we never camped out over night. Happy new year!
