Atomic Bombshell

Bling Blight

February 20th, 2005

Wasted an entire weekend thanks to those evil little rocks! I’ll need the President’s Day holiday just to recover from searching for the perfect wedding ring. Yes, I said wedding ring, and yes, I realize that I’ve been married for a thousand years. Please allow me to explain…

Short Version: I am one picky lady.

Marilyn Monroe lied to us when she sang “Diamonds are a girl’s best friend” – I’ve just been to the most prestigious jewelers on the planet and I didn’t find a damn thing that I really felt was made for me.

Harry Winston, Cartier, Bulgari, Tiffany, David Orgell, Buccellati, David Webb, Van Cleef & Arpels… You name it and I was there this weekend. Didn’t even let pouring rain deter us from hitting Rodeo Drive, because this past Valentine’s Day my husband declared that I may no longer walk about with a naked ring finger.

There’s the girly part of me that thinks, “Yay! Big sparkly shiny things!” but then there’s the 51% majority that’s just too practical and thinks, “How about a kick-ass flat panel home theater system with a DVD recorder and surround sound instead?” Mr. Aurorealis isn’t having it… We’re getting a ring. End of story.

So what does this mean? It means we’re spending every weekend for the rest of our lives searching for the ring. We’ve already spent two of them shopping with no luck. I’m exhausted by the whole idea of continuing, and the longer it takes the more picky I become.

Now I’m screwed. We visited all the awesome jewelers and I walked away empty-handed and unimpressed. What’s with all the boring and uninspired jewelry out there? Is it really too much to ask for an interesting diamond eternity band? It would seem so.

I’m probably just being a relentless bitch, but I don’t want something on my hand all day every day for the rest of my life that doesn’t make me smile every single time I look down at it, and with all the time I spend typing away… That’s a lot of life.

Wish me luck! I’ll keep you posted.

One ring to rule them all … Something comes to mind that would put a smile on your face.

Have you thought about meeting with a jeweler and having them design a ring for you? That’s what my hubs did. They can really make something tailored to your taste.

    Good luck :)

I went through the same thing. I was going to suggest, too, that you have one designed for you. Might be an option! Unless you like trudging in and out of jewelry stores all day long. Good luck!

Did you look at Michael Beaudry designs? http://www.michaelbeaudry.com/
    Penny Preville? http://pennypreville.com/welcome.htm

They’re my favorite designers, and they are both willing to modify designs to suit your taste. I have custom pieces from both of them.

Before you go plopping down thousands of dollars on diamonds, you may want to read this article — http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/11.09/diamond.html

It will change the way you think about diamonds. Make sure your hubby reads it, too, then go shopping for your new home theater! :o )

Thanks, and you’re right. I’ll probably end up having one designed, but the thought of it scares me half to death. First of all, how do you find the right jeweler, and secondly, how do you make sure you’re not getting ripped off?

Just make sure you go with a platinum band, none of that tacky yellow gold.

    Good luck sweetie.

    Good luck!

My wife managed to break a piece of her ring after a couple of years – and we think ‘friends’ stole it. Good thing it was insured.

You might try a smaller custom jeweler. My parents did that with theirs. Mom’s ring is actually an emerald flanked by diamond baguettes. I’ve seen others do it as well and they were happier that way than if they had gone the traditional route with more well-known jewelers.

    …and I’m such a sucker…

I am picky too. I don’t wear any other jewelry, so the ring has to be gorgeous. My ring (which I had to have cut off this weekend – damn kids) is an antique. I have always been a sucker for an antique platinum diamond ring…they just don’t make them like they used to.

I would suggest checking out some good antique stores or estate sales and get a gorgeous ring that also has some history!

I had my ring designed by a guy in San Diego. Shop was called David of California. When I lost the first ring in a freak accident, I bided my time with no wedding ring until I could make a special plane trip back to San Diego just to sit down with him again and make me a new ring.

Realizing that you may not live in the San Diego portion of SoCal, I’d just like to say this: I live in Hawaii and there is not a soul on this earth that I would trust to design a ring for me ever again.

I, too, am the type of gal who pulls more in the directions of big fun electronic investments. Jewerly kind of… bores me sometimes. I know thats just plain ludacris for any woman to say…

Allow me to refer you to an outstanding jeweler, my brother. He specializes in making the perfect ring for the hard to please.

He’s gone to Thailand on business, but he’ll be back Monday.

He helped me make my princess’ ring, and of course got me a great deal.

Email me on my HopelesslyAverage account and I’ll send he contact info.

Dont do it! FUCK DIAMONDS! You are supporting a horrific industry that still practices slavery and is artificially manipulated.

Have a magical gorgeous ring made with your favorite stones… and if diamonds are your favorites, consider white sapphires.

I know someone that can design you the perfect ring.
