Saw the movie its first night in theatres last Friday and I gotta say, it was more like an adaptation of the Cliff’s Notes for the Douglas Adams novel, but it was fun, especially seeing Marvin the manically depressed robot brought to life onscreen.
What made the event complete was being surrounded by fellow geeks from nearby JPL and CalTech. If you’ve never heard the symphony of a roomful of these guys laughing, you really haven’t lived… Or maybe you’ve just never attended a Star Trek convention.
I had the distinct pleasure of unintentionally causing some laughter during the opening trailers: They aired a commercial for Paco Rabanne cologne, and without looking up from my game of Tetris I mumbled a deadpan “WRONG demographic” precisely as the theatre fell silent.
Couldn’t help getting the feeling it was all a dry run for the upcoming release of Star Wars: Episode III …How crazy is it gonna be to watch the bad guys win?! I’m just gonna sit here and twitch until it opens.

I especially enjoyed the stop-motion animation in the YARN scene! There’s nothing quite like yarn puke.

I totally agree about the geek-fest! My buddy Jon said our theatre was like a big dorkdom, and if there was a problem, we could merge together like Voltron to solve our problem, yee ha!

(In the voice of Marvin) Life? You call that Life? You are a cheery little bombshell aren’t you? That was the most miserable thing that a robot could have that is considered a “life”.
Anyhow – I’m sure you have read my review. I got a kick out of lots of it – especially when Marvin used the point-of-view gun on all the Vogons. I was so undepressed that I had to hold myself down.

Hehehe, I thought the movie was cute too, but I haven’t read the books either. Why does your picture of the cast look like a picture of the Scissor Sisters?? LOL

We saw this Sunday afternoon. This is not a good movie to see on Sunday afternoon in Texas suburbia, as the theater was nearly empty. Movies like this require a crowd.
Loved Alan Rickman as the voice of Marvin, but, I don’t know, I think there are some books that are better as BOOKS – and radio plays. To me, the definitive Hitchhiker’s Guide is the original radio play.
But then, it was also the first science fiction I ever really read.
