Get Set Go

June 6th, 2005

GAME ON! Without the usual 24-hour cross-country trek to prepare, the children have descended, bringing with them the usual lot of woes… Broken this, missing that, and nothing but the clothing on their backs. Lucky for all, I suck at that old-fashioned “wicked stepmother” stuff. There’s always a new wardrobe waiting – in triplicate.

Unfortunately, there are some details that cannot be accounted for in advance – Shoes, for example: Who knows what size they’ll be this year! Our first day is always a chick-fest of shoe shopping (woe is me.) That, and sorting through storage cubbies to rid ourselves of anything from last year that no longer fits.

People, this is almost as domestic as it gets for me… Pathetic, eh?

Of course, there are also the fun little surprises that inevitably fill up the first week with chores – This year it was finding out our oldest has been walking around with broken glasses for months. Bless her mother’s heart for not giving a crap… We’ll get new ones tomorrow.

What matters is they’re here. We’ll fatten up their albino Ethiopian frames over the next few weeks and have a blast doing it. As the beloved Chaos-Girl reminds us, it’s in the daily hustle and bustle that love reigns. I have new respect for real moms this time of year.

Hi There! 3 girls? WOW! I have 2 stepsons that spend most of the summer with me, I just can’t imagine 3 girls! The shopping would be awesome, but the drama… Oh my.

Sounds to me like you are acting pretty much like a real mom…

Have fun with the girls and enjoy your summer!

Aurora, I know I’m a little old and a pain in the ass, but nonetheless… Will you adopt me please?

You are a good mommy. May I suggest the following:

    1. Husbands vision care plan for glasses. See if they can get 2 pairs per year.

    2. Target for as much stuff as possible EXCEPT the shoes.

    3. Children, even girls, go through their shoes really fast. I suggest (its not my money, mind you), 2 pairs for each at least: A pair of good sneakers that you replace before they go home at the end of the summer and a pair of something like topsiders. I buy myself one pair of Sperry topsiders or Blucher moccasins from LL Bean (Im preferential to the Bluchers – They look great on girls). They last a long time and are good casual shoes. And of course they will need some party shoes.

You’re right about clothes at Target – I get some AWESOME deals there. It’s hard to beat shorts & tops for four bucks each! Believe it or not, I found adorable, sturdy sneakers there for under ten bucks, too. Also got sandals, since we practically live at the pool and beach all summer. We also ordered clearance hiking boots from the REI outlet online for upcoming mountain excursions… Voila! They’re covered on the hubbins’ vision plan, including up to $90 for frames. I think I’m gettin’ good at this wifey stuff.

Fatten them up with some pancakes! Can Kanga come visit you for new glasses too? :) I’ve been on these frames for about 3 years, and for at least the last year the left arm has been held on not with the screw, but with a twisted-around-and-bent-in-to-hold-it-together piece of staple. w00t!
