Perfect Strangers

December 8th, 2005

Perfect StrangersWhen am I going to get it through my stubborn noggin that whenever I am intially suspicious of a person, it only means that later on they’re going to turn out to be one of the most awesome people I’ve ever met?

You’d think that after as many times as it’s happened I’d be wise to this game. Unfortunately, I’m still longing for the day when at this first impulse, instead of testing a person and shying away, I become excited and dig in to get to know them a little bit better.

Well, as long as you don’t test them so much they run from you, you still end up with an awesome new friend, right?

It’s human nature… and at least you get past it in the end. I never seem to get past that initial distrust/dislike, so my best friends are dogs.

Better to be initially fearful then learn to fear them the hard way.

    You are lucky!

Being wary first and then finding this goodie of a pal is wonderful. Now me, thinking almost every chick I meet is a wonderful person and then unfortunately finding out they have been serving up their pet dog for those lovely hosted sit down dinners.

I long for an honest to goodness real life gal pal that only has mental illness in her family a few generations back.

    Hmm…

That is interesting that you feel that way when you first meet a future friend. I’m usually the other way around – I think they’re gonna be nice and then they turn out to be backstabbers.

Is there something you aren’t telling us?

Well, I hate to tell ya – They’re never girls! Still no progress there.
And nothing to report about, merely observing the phenomenon.
Didn’t mean to be a tease… No new amigos on the horizon.

A good way of approaching a person is to just give them the benefit of the doubt, and treat them with respect, give them a chance to prove their friendship… and then, when things don’t work out, cut them loose.

    April…
    The benefit of the doubt…
    Hmmmmmm
    What is that?

    The Bombshell…
    Oh lord girl…
I go with the just hate every one theory first.
    Or at least sorta…

Well, I know you had every right to be initally suspicious of me when I first landed on your doorstep

If you are standoffish at first it’s less threatning. It slows things down, and a better friendship develops.

Also, I think it’s better to be unsure, you have to take the time to get to know someone before you trust them. Like Susie said.

Well then… Maybe I don’t feel so bad!

I have a girlfriend in TN who has the same thing going! It’s not 100%, but she often meets people who generate a “red flag”…and then later they turn out to be bosom friends. I’m just nervous about new people in general because of my extreme introversion. If there’s no “fourth wall” (ie. I’m not on stage) then people are just too scary!

I totally do that too! I’m always so “guarded” and the people I don’t like in the beginning sometimes turn out being really great! Actually, I think a lot of people do that.

I’m always on guard regardless of who it is.
