I need a stylist! Normally I enjoy keeping myself fairly well dressed, but lately it’s been a maddening challenge to avoid wearing the same things each week. My choices are seriously lacking. Every weekend it’s become a ritual to hit the stores to expand my wardrobe, but it hasn’t been to much avail.
In trying to figure out what’s at the crux of this problem, I realized that I don’t even know what looks good on me any more. Furthermore, my personal style has always been difficult to label. My look is largely conservative, slightly contemporary, with a clear feminine bent, but I draw from some strange ends of the spectrum, as well.
Another part of the issue simply has to do with time. Though our taste naturally evolves over our lifespan, sometimes it takes a quantum leap. There were a handful of retailers whom I used to rely upon almost exclusively, and today when I walk inside nothing appeals to me. How funny that when you change a lot on the inside it eventually pushes its way out.

Yeah — look what happened to Brooks Brothers when they tried to evolve!

I’m experiencing much the same thing… I have made a personal committment to myself to make the time because I know that if I dress better I will feel better.

Same problem here. I find that it’s harder to find things I like in the winter but summer is no problem. Went into my favorite store and there was nothing I liked. Grrrr! At least it’s not just me, right?

I hear ya – shopping lately is kind of a drag because just about everything is so ugly! AND if I do happen to find something I really like it costs a fortune and I can’t justify buying it. I’m having the same problem rotating the same outfits at work. Argh!

And what I also want to know is — WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED TO THE BUSINESS SUIT?! These days finding an attractive women’s suit is about as rare as sashimi. All the styles I’ve seen lately seem targeted toward 80-year old women attending weddings.

I went thought changes like these before, twice. Both times after giving birth. Both times my style changed dramatically.
I’m still trying to figure it out! Sorry I can’t help you there.

I know you know I walked away from that world… I may never go back. Or if I am lucky I will never go back… But I have to say you do it with… Grace.

I find my style is devolving moreso than evolving. Since moving to the city, my homeless hipster look is taking over the rest of my wardrobe. Who knew it was so damn expensive to look destitute and artsy.

My style has been through major changes in the past 24 months. I say 24 because of my move to the ‘burbs, birth of twin girls, fight to get my body back, and return to the workforce (my new job requires dress-up vs. the “business casual” I used to have). Regarding suits, I find that I am, like The Bombshell, generally classic, but with a girlie bent and I like to be fashion forward. My closet seems to be divided right now between stuff I love and stuff I have and can’t figure out why I bought it.
Regarding suits: I really LOVE Nanette Lepore, but oh, man $$$$! And I’ve realized something else, if you want a decent suit, you’re paying for it and it will probably only last a season!
Finally, I realized something else (which sucks) I’m not in my 20′s anymore and can’t get away with dressing like it. *sigh*. Sorry this was so long-winded, but man, you touched a nerve!

How true it is… Right now I just want to wear jeans all the time. Used to dress up a lot, but not lately… BTW – cool blog – like your arcade

I know the feeling. When I have money, there’s nothing in the stores I will wear! In the long run I think I’m going to become wealthy enough to afford a professional tailor. Maybe I’ll sponsor some sweat shop slave and her family from the third world, so I can have an exclusive seamstress to put together my designs. Or I’d better learn to sew with more skill.

It’s funny, I had more style when I was younger, but now, I could care less sorta. No doubt, I love the styles of clothing, but it just doesn’t make much of a difference to me. If you saw me in person, you’d see a woman sporting an afro with yoga clothes on, that’s just me. I like sporty stuff, because I think it’s sexy, but very comfortable at the same time.

What’s wrong with wearing the same things every week (well, every few weeks)? If you like it and it’s clean, that should be good enough. Where is it written that we have to have a 500 piece wardrobe? Up until the 1950s, your average woman only had a few things to circulate in her wardrobe unless she was fabulously wealthy.
If you like it, wear it! Don’t fall prey to the marketing scam that is the modern fashion world. Buy stuff that lasts and take good care of it. Remember: the less stuff you have, the less stuff you have to take care of.

Also, since obesity is such an epidemic…I personally feel that ladies like us, who have lost a lot of weight and are now in dire need of new clothes, should get like at least one k-note tax credit towards the purchase of said items. It only seems fair.

At least you understand it the right way. Some people think that their outward appearance can make them be the person they want to be on the inside. Have a great holiday. Peace…
